Man Utd market values: 15 downgrades as squad value drops by €78.05m
Manchester United have endured a difficult season and that’s resulted in their overall market value falling more than any other English Premier League club to €799.35 million in the latest Transfermarkt update. Erik ten Hag enjoyed a successful debut campaign, leading United to third place and their first trophy in six years with the League Cup. The improvement was expected to continue this season after investing €203.4m in the summer with Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund all high-profile arrivals.
While decimated by injuries, United have failed to replicate last season’s form and the pressure is growing on Ten Hag after being knocked out of Europe completely. While only four players have increased in value in the latest update, 15 have dropped and we’ve examined the biggest winners and losers.
Manchester United’s four market value increases
Kobbie Mainoo has been one of the shining lights of United’s dismal season and he won man-of-the-match on his full debut against Everton with a sensational performance. The 18-year-old was earmarked for a major role by Ten Hag before picking up an injury in pre-season but he’s widely regarded as one of the best young English talents with his market value rising by €5.2m to €6m. Mainoo is the epitome of the modern midfielder as he’s extremely press resistant, possesses an excellent passing range and he’s expected to build on his seven appearances as the season progresses.
Alejandro Garnacho has developed into a regular starter this season and his value has soared by €5m to €25m The 19-year-old’s attacking output can improve with just four goal contributions in 22 appearances this season, but United’s attacking unit hasn't functioned effeciently. Garnacho already has three caps for Argentina and his incredible overhead kick against Everton is arguably one of the greatest ever goals in the Premier League.
Scott McTominay has been in fantastic goalscoring form for club and country in 2023, netting 14 times. The 27-year-old was strongly linked with leaving United in the summer, with West Ham interested, but he’s played regularly in recent weeks. While legitimate question marks persist over McTominay’s long-term role at United, he’s stepped up with important goals for club and country with his value rising by €3m.
Facundo Pellistri remains on the cusp of United’s first-team but his value has increased by €1m. The tricky winger isn’t good enough to be a regular starter at Old Trafford but he’s shown great energy across 11 appearances and he’s also an Uruguayan international.
Manchester United’s top five market value decreases
Mason Mount arrived from Chelsea in the summer for €64.2m but his value has now dropped from €60m to €45m. Mount’s adaptation to his new club has been limited due to injury and he’s missed 13 games with two unspecified issues. The England international impressed former Ajax boss Ten Hag during a loan spell at Vitesse in Holland but Mount has failed to register a single goal contribution this season.
Antony is arguably the worst signing of Ten Hag’s era and highlights the criticism of the Dutch manager’s transfer record. United vastly overpaid when they splurged €95m to sign the Brazilian international from Ajax and his value has dropped €15m to just €35m in the latest update. Antony has remarkably failed to provide a single goal or assist in 17 appearances this season but he remains a regular starter which has raised eyebrows at Old Trafford.
Casemiro was a revelation during his debut season at United as he provided the defensive protection in midfield that had been absent for years. The former Real Madrid star’s experience was vital but he’s suffered with injuries this season, missing 14 games. Despite an impressive goal return of four in 12 appearances, Casemiro is approaching his 32nd birthday and his value has dropped by €10m.
Raphael Varane has fallen out of favour with Ten Hag and he’s only made 14 appearances despite being fit for the majority of the campaign. Varane’s defensive qualities are renowned but Ten Hag has questioned his ball-playing ability and he’s favoured Harry Maguire at right centre-back recently. Varane has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and United could look to cash in with his value falling by €10m to €25m.
Jadon Sancho has been banished by Ten Hag and his departure feels inevitable during the January window. Signed from Borussia Dortmund for €85m in 2021, Sancho has struggled to replicate his Bundelisga form and he’s not played for United since August after an outburst towards Ten Hag after being dropped from the squad to face Arsenal. Undoubtedly a talented player, Sancho’s future will be away from United and it’s down to the winger to make good on his ability.
Manchester United's market value drops by almost €80m
The total market value of United’s squad has dropped by €78.05m, which is a fall of €61.85 more than Chelsea, who are the team with the second biggest decrease. However, United's value remains higher than last December (€732.6m) due to the arrivals of Mount, Onana and Hojlund.
United's overall value is just €600,000 less than it was in December 2020 but it's significantly lower that it's record-high of €919.55m in 2021 when high-value assets like Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Pogba were at the club. There will be optimism that United's value can increase in the next upgrade if first-team players can find form and talented youngsters like Mainoo and Garnacho continue their impressive development.
