Liverpool market values: Szoboszlai gets upgrade, despite squad market value dropping to €867m
With just one defeat from their first 17 Premier League games and no extended Champions League campaign to worry about, Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool side have surprised many through the manner in which they’ve raced towards the top half of the league table and involved themselves in this season’s title race. That, undoubtedly, is due to a number of new signings and star players stepping up a gear and performing for the Anfield side. Which is clear for all to see when we take a look at the market value changes in Liverpool’s squad in the latest Transfermarkt market value update of the Premier League.
The biggest Liverpool increases in market value
Dominik Szoboszlai: There’s little doubt that following the big names that left the club in the summer, Liverpool needed a new midfielder that would not only perform on the pitch but also prove to be a leader off it too. Fortunately for Klopp and his side, Dominik Szoboszlai has proven to be exactly that. Although he may only have two goals and three assists to his name in the league, the Hungarian no.8 has proved pivotal to Liverpool’s new-look side and as a result has seen his market value increase to €75m.
Trent Alexander-Arnold: The last few seasons haven’t been kind on Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, as opposing teams have slowly but surely figured out that the England international may hold some defensive weaknesses behind his clear attacking intent. However, this time around, Alexander-Arnold has looked far more composed and with two goals and two assists in his first 15 league games is undoubtedly beginning to look back to his best. For the first time in 12 months, his market value has risen by €5m to €70m.
Konstantinos Tsimikas: With an injury to Andrew Robertson ruling him out for much of the season, Klopp has been forced to turn to Konstantinos Tsimikas to fill in at left-back and there’s no doubt that the Greek international has thrived under the pressure. With three assists in nine league games and a number of impressive defensive performances to date, Tsimikas has seen his market value rise to €22m.
Jarell Quansah: After impressing on loan at Bristol Rovers last season in League One, 20-year-old central defender Jarell Quansah was called up to Klopp’s first team this time around and is now considered a regular member of the first team. Although most of his game time has come in the Europa League, there’s little doubt that the young talent has bags of potential. As a result of his improved standing at Anfield, Quansah has seen his market value increase by €4m to €6m.
Conor Bradley: Following a loan spell at Bolton last season that saw the young full-back bag no less than seven goals and six assists in all competitions, Conor Bradley was quickly promoted to Klopp’s first team this season and has proven to be a smart understudy to Alexander-Arnold. As such, his market value has increased by €500k to €2m.
The biggest Liverpool decreases in market value
Cody Gakpo: Signed back in January for a sizable fee of €42m, Cody Gakpo has so far struggled to live up to the hype. Although the Dutch forward has done reasonably well in the Europa League and League Cup, with four goals and two assists in six games, his Premier League form has been far from ideal with just two goals in 15 games. As such, Klopp has rarely started the forward and that has resulted in his market value dropping by €5m to €50m.
Andrew Robertson: Although still a valuable and crucial member of Klopp’s defence, Robertson has spent much of this season out of action with a shoulder injury. Unfortunately for the Scotland international, injuries are beginning to catch up with him and at 29 years of age that could become a bigger factor in his playing time going forward. As such, his market value has dropped by €5m to €35m.
Harvey Elliott: Despite his young age and clear potential, Harvey Elliott has still so far struggled to nail down a starting role in Klopp’s team and has instead found himself being slotted in a number of positions depending on injuries and poor form elsewhere. As such, despite making 22 appearances for the club this season, Elliot has bagged just one goal and two assists. As a result his market value drops by €5m to €30m.
Joel Matip: Signed on a free transfer back in 2016, Joel Matip will undoubtedly go down as one of Liverpool’s best ever signings. However, now at 32 years of age, the Cameroon defender is beginning to look his age and as a result has seen his market value drop to €8m.
Alisson: Although Alisson may still be the first name on Klopp’s team sheet each week and undoubtedly remains one of the best goalkeepers in the world, there’s no doubt that the Anfield shot-stopper has made a number of crucial mistakes this season and looks far from his best. As a result, the 31-year-old goalkeeper has seen his market value drop by €3m to €32m.
Virgil van Dijk: At 32 years of age, Virgil van Dijk remains one of the best central defenders in the Premier League. However, the Dutch international has begun to look a little slow on the turn and, naturally, begun to lose some of the shine that made him so crucial to Liverpool’s success in recent years. His market value has subsequently dropped by €3m to €32m.
Stefan Bajcetic: After an impressive debut season last time round which saw Stefan Bajcetic get promoted to a starting role in Klopp’s midfield due to numerous injuries, a nasty calf injury has so far ruled the Spaniard out of action this season. And there’s now a growing worry as to whether he’ll be able to elbow his way back to the front of the queue when he returns to full fitness. His market value has dropped by €2m to €10m.
Thiago: Unfortunately, history may remember Thiago as a player with immense talent but also one that never truly managed to overcome the many injuries that plagued his career. That remains the case this season, as the Spaniard has so far failed to play a single minute of football for Liverpool and has therefore seen his market value drop to €10m.
Liverpool squad value falls to €867m
Despite enjoying a number of market value increases to key players throughout the squad, a larger quantity of decreases to out-of-form or simply older players has meant that Liverpool’s squad market value has dropped by 1.2% to €866.6m. In other words, the squad market value has dropped by €10.7m since the last market value update. Although this isn’t a huge drop off, it is someway short of the club’s record high of €1.09 billion that was set in April 2020. Which perhaps indicated the size of the transition job Klopp & Co. have on their hands right now, as they look to replace ageing or departed star with new talents.
